Cross-Border Individual and Expat Tax
Coordinated Canadian and US reporting for individuals with connections to both countries.
US Citizens and Green-Card Holders in Canada
US citizens and resident aliens generally report worldwide income to the United States even while living in Canada. Canadian residents generally report worldwide income to Canada. We coordinate the two filings and assess foreign tax credits, treaty provisions, and information-reporting requirements.
- US Form 1040 and Canadian T1 preparation
- Foreign tax credit coordination
- Residency and treaty analysis
- Review of Canadian investments and registered accounts
- US information returns connected to foreign assets or entities
- State filing considerations
Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures
Eligible taxpayers residing outside the United States might use the Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures to address prior non-willful filing failures. A submission generally includes three years of tax returns, six years of FBARs, payment of applicable tax and interest, and a signed non-willfulness certification. Eligibility requires a fact-specific review.
FBAR and FATCA Reporting
US persons might need to report non-US financial accounts on FinCEN Form 114 when the aggregate maximum value exceeds US$10,000 at any time during the year. Form 8938 applies under separate asset and filing-status thresholds.
Canadian Registered Accounts and Investments
RRSPs, RRIFs, TFSAs, RESPs, FHSAs, mutual funds, private corporations, trusts, and other Canadian arrangements do not all receive the same US tax treatment. We review income inclusion and information-reporting requirements based on the account, asset, ownership, and taxpayer facts.
